51 for 51 Responds to Responds to Mitch McConnell’s Disingenuous Attacks on the Senate Floor

WASHINGTON — This morning, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell falsely attacked 51 for 51, and their call for D.C. statehood legislation to pass the Senate with 51 votes, on the floor of the Senate. 51 for 51 campaign manager Stasha Rhodes released the following statement in response:

“One of the greatest arsonists in American history is screaming ‘Fire.’ Mitch McConnell has abused, altered, and ignored the Senate rules to use 51 votes to give massive tax breaks to billionaires, rip health care from 24 million Americans, and — for the first time — jam through two Supreme Court justices. If 51 votes is good enough for that, it’s damn well good enough to give 700,000 Americans, over half of whom are Black and Brown — who’ve been waiting for over 200 years — representation in Congress.

“This is a guy who has twisted the Senate to serve his every political interest–and then has the gall to turn around and accuse DC residents who pay taxes, who serve our country and our community, and have the same hopes, dreams, fears and aspirations as every other American of disrespecting America. D.C. residents are simply taking the baton from 400 years of Black and Brown freedom fighters and pushing to expand the ‘We’ in ‘We, the people.’ So no, sir, we will not yield.”
