Governor Jay Inslee Voices Support for 51 for 51 Efforts to Call for Statehood for Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As advocates fighting to get full representation for residents of the District of Columbia today gather outside the Capitol to launch a new effort, 51 for 51, to put the issue of Washington, D.C., statehood front and center in the 2020 presidential campaign, Governor Jay Inslee (D-WA), who is running for the 2020 Democratic nomination, publicly voiced support for DC statehood in a tweet saying, “Kill the filibuster” and “Climate action for all.”

In response, 51 for 51 Campaign Director Stasha Rhodes released the following statement:

“As we come together today from groups representing thousands of Washington, D.C., residents, we are excited that momentum is building for statehood. With Governor Inslee’s support for full statehood and the changes to the filibuster that we would need to make statehood a reality, we are heartened that this issue is going to be part of the conversation for candidates vying for our nation’s highest office. The 700,000 residents of Washington, D.C., who have paid taxes without full representation have waited long enough–it’s past time for our full rights to be realized.”
