Mayor Pete Buttigieg Voices Support for 51 for 51 Efforts to Call for Washington D.C. Statehood

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today 2020 Presidential Candidate Pete Buttigieg announced his support for D.C.statehood and 51 for 51, the grassroots coalition hoping to make D.C. the 51st state with a simple majority in the senate.

51 for 51 demands full representation for the more than 700,000 residents of the District of Columbia who pay federal taxes, but lack voting representation in Congress. The coalition of 15 progressive groups say American citizens living in the district deserve a voice in congress and control over their own local laws.

This announcement comes after natives from the District of Columbia travelled from Washington to Iowa in order to bring statehood to the 2020 issues debate.

This is the third presidential candidate to endorse passing D.C. statehood legislation with a simple majority. The House of Representatives will hold a hearing on statehood in July for the first time since the early 1990s. House majority leader Sen. Hoyer endorsed his support for statehood for the district at the end of May.

51 for 51 is a coalition comprised of DC-based and national groups committed to equal representation rights for D.C.’s over 700,000 residents.
