Senator Elizabeth Warren Voices Support for 51 for 51 Efforts to Call for Washington D.C. Statehood

Cedar Rapids, IA —  Yesterday in Cedar Rapids, Senator Elizabeth Warren announced her support for D.C.statehood, agreeing that a simple majority in the Senate is the way to make it happen.

She joins a host of 2020 presidential candidates who are endorsing 51 for 51, the local and national grassroots coalition empowering advocates and focused on increasing national awareness around statehood for the District of Columbia.

The 700,000 taxpaying Americans who are residents of D.C. still don’t have equal representation nor the right to vote in Congress.

Warren’s announcement on Sunday comes after six young Washingtonians, whose families have lived in the district for generations, travelled across Iowa to bring the issue of statehood front and center for 2020 candidates.

For the first time in 25 years, the House of Representatives will hold a hearing on statehood on July 24th, lead by Rep. Elijah Cummings. House majority leader Sen. Hoyner endorsed his support for statehood for the district at the end of May.

51 for 51 is a coalition comprised of DC-based and national groups committed to equal representation rights for D.C.’s over 700,000 residents. The coalition of 15 progressive groups say American citizens living in the district deserve a voice in congress and control over their own local laws.
