Senator Gillibrand Voices Support for 51 for 51 Efforts to Call for Washington D.C. Statehood

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The day before advocates fighting to get full representation for residents of the District of Columbia are set to launch a new effort, 51 for 51, to put the issue of Washington, D.C. statehood front and center in the 2020 Presidential Campaign, Senator Gillibrand, who is running for the 2020 Democratic nomination, publicly voiced her support in a tweet, saying “Democracy doesn’t mean ‘for some of us.’”

In response, 51 for 51 Campaign Director Stasha Rhodes released the following statement:

“The over seven hundred thousand residents of Washington, D.C. have waited long enough to have the full rights afforded all the other tax-paying citizens of our great nation. To get there, the Senate needs to make sure that the same number of votes needed to approve the Supreme Court to lifetime appointments, can approve full rights for Washington, D.C. residents.

“Senator Gillibrand is the first to fully embrace this vision, and we hope that those vying to lead our country will join her in the efforts to get full rights for its residents.”

51 for 51 is a coalition comprised of DC-based and national groups committed to equal representation rights for D.C.’s over 700,000 residents.
